How to remove PPE in the correct order?

The correct removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is crucial for preventing contamination and the spread of infectious diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides a recommended sequence for safely removing PPE. Here’s a general guide:

  1. Gloves: Remove gloves first. Grasp the outside of one glove at the wrist. Do not touch your bare skin. Peel the glove away from your body, pulling it inside out. Hold the removed glove in the gloved hand. Slide the fingers of the ungloved hand under the remaining glove at the wrist peel off the second glove over the first glove, and discard appropriately.
  2. Gown: Unfasten the gown ties or buttons, starting with the neck, and then the waist. Pull the gown away from your body, rolling it inside out and touching only the inside of the gown. Discard appropriately.
  3. Goggles/Face Shield: If goggles or a face shield are used, handle them by the headband or earpieces and pull them away from your face. Discard appropriately or place in a designated receptacle for reprocessing.
  4. Mask or Respirator: Remove a mask or respirator last. Grasp the bottom ties or elastics, then the ones at the top, and remove them without touching the front. Discard appropriately.
  5. Hand Hygiene: After removing PPE, always wash your hands immediately with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

This sequence assumes that gloves, a gown, eye protection, and a mask or respirator are being used. If only some of these items are used, adjust the sequence accordingly.

Also, note that this is a general guideline, and the specific PPE used and the order of removal may vary depending on the specific circumstances and the policies of your organization.
