What are cut resistant gloves?

Cut-resistant gloves are a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to protect your hands from cuts, slashes, or lacerations. They are commonly used in various industries where workers handle sharp objects or materials, such as in construction, manufacturing, food service, and glass or metal handling.

Cut-resistant gloves are made from high-performance materials that resist cutting. These materials can include:

  • Kevlar: A lightweight synthetic material that’s five times stronger than steel on an equal-weight basis. It’s often used in heat-resistant and cut-resistant gloves.
  • Dyneema: A high-strength synthetic fiber that offers maximum strength combined with minimum weight. It’s up to 15 times stronger than steel.
  • Metal Mesh: Stainless steel or other high-strength metal wires are woven together to form a highly cut-resistant glove.
  • High-Performance Polyethylene (HPPE): A type of polyethylene with a high tensile strength-to-weight ratio, used in many cut-resistant gloves.

The level of cut resistance is often categorized based on standards set by organizations like the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or the European Standard EN 388. These standards use a scale to rate the cut resistance of a glove, with a higher rating indicating a higher level of cut resistance.

It’s important to remember that while cut-resistant gloves can significantly reduce the risk of hand injuries, they are not entirely cut-proof and do not provide absolute protection. Always use caution when handling sharp objects or materials.
