The “goodness” of a GSM fabric depends largely on its intended use. Different applications require different weights of fabric. Here’s a general guide:
- Lightweight fabric (100-150 GSM): This weight is suitable for light clothing items like T-shirts, summer clothes, bedsheets, and more. Lightweight fabric is breathable and comfortable but may not be as durable as heavier fabrics.
- Medium weight fabric (150-350 GSM): This weight is often used for office shirts, regular bedsheets, and light blankets. It offers a good balance between comfort, durability, and breathability.
- Heavyweight fabric (350+ GSM): This weight of fabric is usually used for denim, sweatshirts, hoodies, jackets, and more. Heavyweight fabric is warm and durable but may not be as breathable as lighter fabrics.
For towels, often a higher GSM of 500-700 is preferred because they are more absorbent and plush. For curtains, a higher GSM can provide better light blocking and insulation.
It’s important to note that GSM is not the only indicator of fabric quality. The type of fiber, the method of weaving, and the way the fabric is finished also significantly contribute to the quality, feel, and durability of the fabric. Always consider these factors along with GSM when choosing fabric for a particular use.
